Moshannon State Forest Fieldtrip to present resources to locate abandoned gas wells
Penfield, Pa. - An informational presentation presenting resources to locate abandoned gas wells will be held beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 15 at the Moshannon State Forest District Office, followed by fieldwork in Moshannon State Forest ending at 4:00 PM.

Activities will include a brief informational session outlining the resources available to identify areas of historic oil and gas development and the process of locating orphan and abandoned wells. Participants will then participate in guided activities focusing on surface expressions of historic oil and gas development (USGS Geologic Survey Maps, Penn Pilot Aerial Photography, WPA mining maps) and on using historic documents (land deeds, property surveys, etc.) to locate orphan and abandoned wells. The afternoon will consist of fieldwork in areas of historic oil and gas development in Moshannon State Forest, focusing on locating an abandoned oil and gas well and taking field observations at the fieldsite.

Both lunch and transportation to the fieldsite will be provided. However, interested participants will need to make individual arrangements for transportation to the Moshannon State Forest District Office.
